Being part of such a diverse background has really opened my eyes to a world outside of pop culture. And it also helped push me away from it, because I wasn’t the everyday “norm” people would see on TV, I’d get teased, harrassed, shunned etc. Kids can be brutal.
What makes me unique is my outlook on life, and well, not to sound shallow but my looks only because my backround contains so many different ethnicities being that my mom is part Jamaican and Cherokee Indian while my dad is Puerto Rican and Filipino. Bet you haven’t heard of that mix before!
As far as pop culture, I’ve never been one to buy magazines featuring all the “pop diva’s” with their new hairdo’s and whatnot. I tend to go against the norms of society. I do what I want, dress
how I want, and because of that I stand out.
Ever since I was in elementary school I did the opposite of what everyone else did. Not because I’m contrary, but because I was raised to wear what I could afford. And while everyone at my school
was buying nikes and reeboks in the 90’s, I was wearing chuck taylors and skate boarding.
I tend to not be interested in what people in the “pop” world are doing. It doesn’t appeal to me, and I think for the most part it just sets a bad example for the young people who grow up, and want
to be like the people they see on TV. I have 8 siblings, 5 of which are younger than me. So I get to watch as they follow the “pop” trends, and it just saddens me. When I was their age “pop culture”
didn’t have such a huge affect on my peers as it does on the young people these days. It’s like they’re all brainwashed.

To me, beauty is not the clothes you wear, the makeup on
your face, or the size of your jeans; beauty is being able to brighten someone’s day with
just a smile.
Stopping the widespread ideal of the blond size 0 isn’t just material, it
is revolutionary. It is progress. We now have a black president, why can’t we have size
12 girls on the magazine covers?
How am I different? I am not obsessed with the tabloid covers, Perez Hilton, or how much my jeans cost. I am not ashamed to shop at Dollar Tree. I will go out in public with no makeup. I will give compliments and actually mean them. And, most importantly, I open myself to see the good in others, not just find the flaws to hide my own.

Jaclyn Rose – Stop Pop Culture Girl

I believe what makes me different is I am a genuine, down to earth, giving and kind person. I have spent most of my life volunteering for various causes and giving back to my community in any way I can. I was given many awards for my volunteering, including a proclamation from the mayor of my hometown for being the “Citizen of the Year”.
Most of Pop Culture makes me sick. The way girls are made to feel they have to be a certain weight and look a certain way to be considered beautiful is just beyond me. People seem to be so wrapped up in their outside appearance that they forget that it honestly is the inside beauty that matters. Looks fade, a beautiful heart is forever. The way our society obsesses over celebrities and what they are doing and how much money they have just really gets to me. I have no interest in any of it.
Family is everything to me. Love, laughing, being outdoors, the little things in everyday life that most people take for granted, I never overlook for a second. When I die I want to be remembered as the girl who always put others first, and did it with a smile.
